BYSTANDER (2020 single)

by Roommate

100% of Roommate's share of proceeds to benefit The National Network of Abortion Funds:

Hello. I'm very pleased to share this new single, a collaboration with my childhood friend John Hampton. In the stomach-churning wake of the 2016 election, a poem John had sent me in October jolted me from my stupor and I quickly set it to music. Luther Rochester added some sci-fi synths and I put the song away until this spring, when Nick Broste took hold of the mix and made it soar. For me it's a song best fit for the dark heart of winter, or perhaps for the most dreadful of Augusts. I hope you are holding on.

We can not hear the hush of drones in flight.
Nor taste secret sigils traced on night tongues.
Oh, can not touch the screams of bombs delight.
We smoke foul words, silent tumors on lungs.
See, not we, through this web of spider's might.
Pie-daggers cloaked cut out their slice on rungs.
Our own tasty drones sigh out in dud-bombs.
Secretly, secretly we have no qualms.
