In August 2020, my friend Richard Williamson sent me this message: "So, I'm not sure if you would remember this but four or so years ago we talked about doing some exchange, creatively. I'm not exactly sure of the specifics of this exchange but I found a folder today labeled, rather suggestively, 'POSSIBLE LYRICS TO SEND TO KENT, SO DO IT'. So, there you have it. I guess back then I thought I'd send you some lyrics."
A few months later, in what felt like a magical reverie, I found myself setting chords and melody to some evocative lines that Richard had named "inner light." I spent a good portion of the dark winter spinning it all into a strange little two and a half minute song.
Have you ever seen an inner light?

lyrics

Andrew screws his face up real cool
Lights up a cigarette and starts off walking
Passing the guy who’s somehow always around
points with two fingers, the smoke, and never slows down

Shining up he’ll begin to drink
Hoping someone speaks
Shut it out when it finally comes
Sounds of children crazily bereaved
And the most disappointing thing
Is that I’m most disappointed in me

A land now awake
dust in dawns brassy blades
So old, yet ahead of its time
I’ve never seen an inner light

I’ve never seen an inner light
